The newly elected President has welcomed the redeployment of US forces in Somalia where al-Shabab attacks had heightened due to a prolonged electoral crisis. This week, US President Joe Biden’s administration announced plans to send about 600 American forces to support targeted operations against al-Shabab militants. Last Sunday Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected President of Somalia for a second time - he was previously president from 2012-2017. Undoubtedly the biggest challenge on his agenda will be the fight against Al Shabaab. Somali legislators have elected former leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the country’s next president, following a long-overdue election on Sunday in the troubled Horn of Africa nation. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who served as Somalia’s president between 2012 and 2017, won the contest in the capital, Mogadishu, amid a security lockdown imposed by authorities to prevent deadly rebel attacks. After a marathon poll, involving 36 candidates, that was broadcast live on state TV, parliamentary officials counted more than 165 votes in favour of former President Mohamud, more than the number required to defeat incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed. Supporters of Somalia’s new leader defied the curfew to pour onto the streets of Mogadishu, cheering and firing guns as it became clear that Mohamud had won the vote. Fifteen years after the creation of al-Shabaab in Somalia, terror still reigns and the reality on the ground just shifted more in their favor. In a last ditch effort to leave a mark on foreign policy before his ouster, President Trump announced a drawdown of US troops in global hotspots around the world, including around 700 in Somalia. With no soldiers on the ground the plan promised to provide support through an already controversial and secretive drone program–which watchdog groups say has killed exponentially more civilians than the US admits. The tiny, picturesque island is not typical of the area. It is part of Yemen, but far away from the civil war. Even many people well acquainted with the region haven’t been to Socotra. Instead, they speak with shining eyes of an island that they long to see one day. Socotra lies off the Horn of Africa. In 2008, the main island and the rest of the archipelago were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of its biodiversity. The hills are dotted with dragon’s blood trees, a species native only here. The place enjoys a strange sense of peace and quiet, 400 kilometers off the south coast of the Yemeni mainland. The civil war is far away and tourism is the main source of income. Most of the travelers who come to Socotra come here from the United Arab Emirates for the water sports - and many snap up land here. They can afford to buy unlike the islanders. Locals are worried because they fear they are losing control of their home. Others are happy about the economic development that has come about thanks to investment from the Emirates and Saudi Arabia. #documentary #dwdocumentary #Socotra DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.
Jamal Osman, a Somali journalist, has watched his country being torn apart by civil war for three decades. He thought that in Kismayo, a city in Jubbaland, southern Somalia, he had found a society which offered up hope of an end to the cycle of violence. But a horrific al-Shabab attack on the city’s Madina Hotel in July this year, which left 26 dead and 56 injured, shattered the fragile hope of lasting security in the region. As part of Jamal’s journey into Jubbaland, he meets alleged al-Shabab fighters in prison as well as a Jubbaland army unit made up of former al-Shabab members, now supporting the government.
