Seven California highway patrol officers and a nurse were charged with involuntary manslaughter after the 2020 death of a motorist in police custody. Edward Bronstein was pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence. A short time later, the California Highway Patrol obtained a warrant to draw his blood. In at least seven policemen are dead. They were gunned down by another officer at a police station in western Kenya. The standoff took place in Kapenguria. The policeman apparently held prisoners hostage. Special commandos from Nairobi were sent in. The siege lasted nine hours. It's not clear what the motive is. Police initially reported it was an attempted jail break by Somali militant group al-Shabaab. It's now emerged that is not the case. A suspected recruiter for al-Shabaab happened to be in the cells when the policeman opened fire on his fellow officers.

An investigation is underway after video allegedly shows a Philadelphia police officer shoplifting from a 7-Eleven. It happened around 10 a.m. last Friday at the convenience store located on the 1100 block of East Luzerne Street. Surveillance video obtained by Action News shows the 25th District male police officer in full uniform walking up to a cooler. He looks through the items and then grabs what a police report describes as a 12-ounce Celsius kiwi guava energy drink that sells for $2.49 plus tax. But instead of paying for the item, the video shows the officer simply walking out the door. That shocked the clerk who alerted the owner's wife who was also at the counter. She did not want her face shown. "Hey, the guy, the officer did not pay for his stuff. I'm like, 'What?' " said Aicha Chajai, the store owner's wife. "I thought maybe he forgot or something, so he keep walking." She and her husband went outside the store to let him know he had to pay for the item. As Rachel Leung reports, the defence questioned whether footage of the incident at the height of the Occupy movement actually showed the policemen who are accused of the assault. The seven policemen were greeted by supporters as they returned to the courthouse this morning. They have all pleaded not guilty to one joint count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, while a fifth defendant has denied an additional count of common assault. Defence lawyers today questioned if the officers allegedly carrying out the assault on activist Ken Tsang, were the actual defendants since it was dark and their faces could not be seen clearly on the TV footage. Lawrence Lok, defence counsel for Chief Inspector Wong Cho-shing, suggested that the person being carried away and allegedly beaten at the substation in Admiralty was not Tsang. Judge David Dufton then demanded the video footage be played to the court He requested that the defence pay close attention to the person’s black shirt and white shoes. Lok also told the court it would be dangerous to come to conclusions because the footage appeared blurry, adding that the view was blocked for 49 seconds, which raised the question of whether all the people in the two shots were the same. He also argued that by taking a look at the person’s clothes, it could have been any of the arrestees that night. Lok also questioned the forensic evidence that Ken Tsang’s wounds were consistent with an assault with a police baton, by noting that the defendants were not carrying batons at the time. Edward Choi, defence counsel for the fourth defendant, Constable Lau Hing-pui, suggested Tsang had portrayed himself as the victim in the incident.He questioned Tsang’s credibility as a person. And challenged the prosecution’s description of the constable’s clothing of light-coloured trousers, as too vague. In his closing arguments, Cheng Huan, defence lawyer for Senior Inspector Lau Cheuk-ngai, requested the judge take into account his client’s unblemished character, adding he was there that evening to protect law and order. The defence will continue its final submissions tomorrow, while the judge said today that he expects to hand down his verdict on January 6th.

Bodycam footage shows police raiding an alleged Ohio drug house and arresting seven suspects on May 6. The Elyria Police Department said officers entered the home after witnessing a man with an outstanding warrant enter. Officers found the suspects hiding in bizarre places, including a pile of laundry and a clothes dryer. The Law&Crime Network’s Sierra Gillespie has further details. Seven officers with the Metropolitan Police Department have been removed from a specialized police unit after an internal investigation led to the discovery of a series of misconduct incidents that involved police stopping people and taking firearms from them, but not making an arrest. DC Police Chief Robert Contee announced on Friday that a member of the community made a complaint on Sept. 11 about an incident involving police officers and an investigation was initiated stemming from that interaction.
