Huge queues of lorries have built up on the Polish-Ukrainian border due to a blockade by Polish truckers, who are accusing Ukrainians of stealing their business. Humanitarian and military aid are waved through into Ukraine, as is perishable food and livestock. But everything else gets stuck. Ukrainian drivers have been sleeping in their cabs for over a week, waiting to cross the border, and are running out of supplies. Ukraine's ambassador to Poland has called the hauliers' protest a "stab in the back" from a country that has been a close ally ever since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Polish truckers said they were forced into this extreme step to protect their livelihoods after the EU lifted all entry restrictions on Ukrainian carriers. In 2021, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko began letting migrants cross his country's border into Poland to retaliate against EU sanctions. Poland strengthened its border controls, but the number of illegal migrant crossings into Germany has been surging in recent months. The Brandenburg region in eastern Germany now finds itself at the crossroads between the Belarus and Balkans migrant routes. Some leaders in Germany are calling for the return of stationary controls in the border region and other eastern German states. A group of some 30 migrants seeking asylum, including small children, has been stuck at Poland's border wall with Belarus for the past four days. The Lukashenko regime has pushed thousand of migrants to the Polish border, where they still remain in freezing conditions. With the border-zone forbidden to NGOs, volunteers provide clandestine assistance. Thousands of migrants from Belarus have had to endure freezing conditions while stranded at the Polish border, most of them have fled Iraqi or Syrian Kurdistan. The 3-kilometer exclusion zone set up by the border is guarded by thousands of soldiers, while a recorded message booms repeatedly through a loudspeaker: 'after crossing the border, you will be sent back to the country you came from'. The majority of migrants depart from Istanbul to Belarus, via a system set up by Lukashenko, with tour operators sponsored by Belarus. From Belarus, they intend to reach Europe via Poland. 'The Belarusian guards stopped and searched us. They kicked me in the face', says Yusef, who made it across the border. They charged a $200 bribe to take Yusef and his group to a different crossing point. 'Last night, the Belarusian police stopped us at the border. They took our chargers and our phone cables', says another young migrant, who spent three days in the forest by the border. With most of the migrants failing several times to cross the border, some are now resorting to people-smugglers to help them enter Europe. Footage released by the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade of Polish Armed Forces on Aug 13, 2023 shows Polish troops movement in the streets of Warsaw on Saturday night. Poland said this week it would move 10,000 troops to its border with Belarus, the latest sign of unease among America’s friends at the presence of Russian mercenary forces now based in this close Kremlin ally. Poland has accused Belarus of creating a major incident on the border between the two countries by encouraging migrants to try to force their way across. The Polish government says there are currently between 3,000 and 4,000 people at the border with thousands more ready to follow them. 12,000 Polish troops have been deployed to protect the razor-wire fence along the border. The European Union says Belarus is deliberately creating the migrant crisis on its borders in retaliation for Western sanctions. Poland has increased border security in anticipation of Russian Wagner mercenaries relocating to neighbouring Belarus. The border between the two countries, which was once marked by wooden look-out posts, has been transformed in recent years with miles of metal fencing and thermal imaging cameras. With the prospect of Wagner members moving to Belarus, armed guards patrolling the border have been stepped-up. "Maybe Wagner will be a problem, but no one really knows why they're going there or what they're preparing for", Michal Bura of the local border guard said. Although the migrants were outside Poland's border wall, activists from Grupa Granica (Border Group) said they were on Polish territory and Belarus was not allowing them to turn back. “In Belarus, they are not safe," activist Marta Staniszewska said. “The Belarusian services, as this group has told us, are threatening threaten them that if they return, they will be beaten, or that they will kill them,” Staniszewska said. The migrants say that several among them are sick and one girl has a toothache, and the children have mosquito bites, according to Staniszewska. A representative of Poland’s ombudsman’s office visited and talked to the group on Sunday, but later told reporters that the decision about whether to allow them into the country belongs to the Polish Border Guard. Last year, Poland put up almost 190 kilometers (117 miles) of tall metal wall intended to stop thousands of migrants from Asia and Africa entering the country from Belarus. The European Union has accused authoritarian Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of aiding illegal border crossings in retaliation for EU sanctions. Lukashenko denies encouraging migration to Europe. Poland's most powerful politician, the head of Poland’s right-wing ruling party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said recently that building the wall was a good decision. He said it was protecting Poland and the EU against hostile moves by Belarus and Russia. The migrant crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus has deepened, with Poland’s Prime Minister accusing Russia’s President Putin of “masterminding” the stand-off. The European Union is threatening to impose new sanctions on Belarus which it says is deliberately sending migrants from the Middle East across its borders into the EU. In recent weeks thousands of people have gathered on the border, hoping to cross from Belarus into Poland and the European Union. Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has appealed to to Russia’s President Putin, an ally of Belarus, to put a stop what she called the inhuman exploitation of migrants. Polish officials closed the crossing with Belarus at the border town of Kuznica on Tuesday morning, a day after thousands of migrants arrived in the area. Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki described the incident as a "hybrid attack" conducted by the regime of Belarus strongman Alexander Lukashenko. "Sealing the Polish border is our national interest. But today the stability and security of the entire EU is at stake," Morawiecki wrote on Twitter. "We will not be intimidated and will defend peace in Europe with our partners from NATO and EU." Belarus denied the Polish accusations, labeling them as "unfounded and unsubstantiated," and claimed Warsaw was deliberately escalating tensions. Hundreds of migrants are believed to still be near the border on Tuesday, with videos showing tents and fireplaces on the Belarusian side. The Polish Interior Ministry said the night was quiet, save for a rock being thrown at a police car. Videos from the scene on Monday showed a large group of migrants attempting to breach the border. Polish border guards and military claim Belarus troops were controlling and directing the group. Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller told reporters that another 3,000 to 4,000 migrants were massing in the area. "We expect that there may be an escalation of this type of action on the Polish border in the near future, which will be of an armed nature," he added.
