The Mucuna pruriens bean has been used in India (Africa, China) for centuries to address a syndrome that causes bradykinesia, tremors, and dementia. Interestingly, Levodopa was derived from Fava beans in 1913, but the Macuna bean has the highest concentration of levodopa (L-dopa), which is converted to dopamine in the brain. The amount of levodopa in these beans can range from 60 to 500 mg, and there is no regulation; in the USA and in many countries, mucuna is not regulated, so it is difficult to know how much you are consuming. This variability in dosages means that it is hard to maintain a steady state. While this may not be a problem at the beginning of the disease, after around five years, complications can arise. It is then important to seek expert help. When it comes to supplements, specifically Mucuna pruriens, I have a strong opinion. If you reside in the United States, there is no need to use this product, as there are potential “unknown” risks involved. However, if you feel that taking Mucuna is benefiting you, then there's no need to switch things up if it's working. For those residing in countries with limited resources, Mucuna can be an option, but it's crucial to seek guidance from a neurologist in your area. It is important to note that creating your own mucuna can be risky due to the potential presence of toxic elements in some mucuna plants. The literature has numerous instances of toxicity caused by ingestion. As for whether I would take Mucuna pruriens if I had Parkinson's disease, my answer is NO. Instead, I would opt for Rytari or Sinemet (carbidopa-Levodopa) in combination with a well-designed exercise program and a balanced diet. Dr. Z

It has a high L-Dopa content, among various other phytochemicals, and is generally taken as an extract according to L-Dopa dose. Velvet Beans or Kapikacchu role in Parkinson's Disease Mucuna pruriens is a tropical bean containing large amounts of levodopa and is the most important natural remedy for Parkinson’s disease. Mucuna pruriens in Parkinson's disease: a double blind clinical and pharmacological study. National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, UK Background: The seed powder of the leguminous plant, Mucuna pruriens has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic Indian medicine for diseases including parkinsonism. We have assessed the clinical effects and levodopa (L-dopa) pharmacokinetics following two different doses of mucuna preparation and compared them with standard L-dopa/carbidopa (LD/CD). Methods: Eight Parkinson's disease patients with a short duration L-dopa response and on period dyskinesias completed a randomised, controlled, double blind crossover trial. Patients were challenged with single doses of 200/50 mg LD/CD, and 15 and 30 g of mucuna preparation in randomised order at weekly intervals. L-Dopa pharmacokinetics were determined, and Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale and tapping speed were obtained at baseline and repeatedly during the 4 h following drug ingestion. Dyskinesias were assessed using modified AIMS and Goetz scales. Results: Compared with standard LD/CD, the 30 g mucuna preparation led to a considerably faster onset of effect (34.6 v 68.5 min; p = 0.021), reflected in shorter latencies to peak L-dopa plasma concentrations. Mean on time was 21.9% (37 min) longer with 30 g mucuna than with LD/CD (p = 0.021); peak L-dopa plasma concentrations were 110% higher and the area under the plasma concentration v time curve (area under curve) was 165.3% larger (p = 0.012). No significant differences in dyskinesias or tolerability occurred. Conclusions: The rapid onset of action and longer on time without a concomitant increase in dyskinesias on mucuna seed powder formulation suggest that this natural source of L-dopa might possess advantages over conventional L-dopa preparations in the long term management of PD. Assessment of long term efficacy and tolerability in a randomized, controlled study is warranted. You want to be able to reliably increase your dopamine levels and one of the best ways to do that naturally is to use Mucuna Pruriens. The fourth benefit is there are studies showing that Mucuna Pruriens supplementation can decrease inflammation in the body. This 2010 study showed that the Mucuna Pruriens extract contains a lot of phenolic acids, phenolic compounds, and it has an antioxidant effect on the body. It basically lowers these free radicals which lowers the free radical damage that's happening inside the body. The last benefit of it is something people probably will never have to use but it's interesting nonetheless. It can protect you from snake venom. Interestingly, studies of mucuna have focused in mostly on energy maintained in the bedroom, so to speak. So far, results have been hopeful. A 2011 study of infertile male men found that their energy levels were returning in their love lives with the help of mucuna. Some studies on animals too—such as this one in 2010—yielded the same results: better energy, endurance, performance, and overall satisfaction, within the bedroom and without. 4. Promotes Brain Health With the ability to provide an all-natural alternative to synthetic sources of L-DOPA—and to also produce a natural source of natural serotonin and dopamine—researchers are seriously considering its potential as a competitive and naturally alternative anti-depressant, though of course, many more studies are needed. What studies are out there so far on its stress-and depression-relieving properties are hopeful, however. A 2010 study of the herb on stressed and infertile men in their older years found that it helped manage stress. In 2014, a study on mice showed that the herb had visible anti-depressant like effects when they were subject to depression-inducing factors. Levodopa ranks as the cornerstone of the disease’s drug therapy. L-Dopa is capable of crossing the protective blood-brain barrier in the brain, an ability which dopamine lacks. L-Dopa is therefore useful in boosting dopamine levels in the treatment therapy of Parkinson’s disease, as well as dopamine-responsive dystonia.
