Simply put, a drivetrain is a series of parts in your car that work together to make your wheels turn. A powertrain, on the other hand, is basically a drivetrain plus the engine and some other parts, 1) Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): Front-wheel drive refers to a car where the transmission sends the engine’s power to the front wheels. Rear-wheel drive is the transmission that sends the engine’s power to the rear wheels. Four-and all-wheel drive cars have power at all four corners. If a vehicle features front-wheel drive, the transmission transfers power from the engine to the front wheels. The majority of cars today have a front-wheel-drive layout. This setup transfers power to the front wheels, allowing them to move and steer the vehicle. 2) Rear Wheel Drive (RWD): Rear-wheel drive is basically the opposite of FRONT-wheel drive. This drive is most commonly found on sports cars and performance sedans. Vehicles that feature rear-wheel drive are a bit more complicated. Vehicles handle much better than front-wheel drive vehicles, and you will notice the difference in curves, turns, and when navigating through traffic situations. 3) 4-Wheel Drive (4WD): Four-wheel drive, often abbreviated as 4WD, 4WD means the power from the engine is delivered to all 4 wheels all of the time when Four-by-Fours(4x4) is engaged. The 4WD vehicles are usually equipped with a transfer case which allows the car to change to RWD transmission to save fuel and get back to 4WD mode if and when required. 4) All Wheel Drive (AWD): An all-wheel-drive arrangement works on the same principle as 4WD, but in most front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive is the primary drive mode. The general misconception is that AWD and 4×4 are the same things. While both have all 4 wheels running and run on the same principles, some key differences set the two apart. FWD vs RWD vs AWD on snow is a question I get asked a lot about, and as the Tesla Model 3 Performance can (sort of) be all three, I took some time out of a Michelin test to see what the differences are. The Tesla is fitted with the excellent Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 which is one of the best ultra high performance all season tires in snow. I drive three laps, one in front wheel drive mode, one in rear wheel drive mode and a final lap in 50/50 all wheel drive split to see what the differences are on snow, including see which is fastest and what the balance of the car is like. Please note we were unable to do traction testing as the Tesla defaults back to AWD when the car is straight, even if it's set to 100% rear wheel drive mode only. This will come at a later date. Ordinarily the Model 3 Performance fits 20” wheels, Michelin have modified their car to accept the base OE 18” wheels which we used for the testing. Also, the OE 18” tire size is 235/45R18, whereas we were only able to get 245/40R18 tires in time for this test. We ran the tires at the OE pressure of 42 psi. Mat and Daniel have pulled up at an indoor ski slope, and they’re about to race each other uphill in these two mighty supercars. Under the surface, these two cars are almost identical. They’re both powered by the same 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10. In the RWD, it produces 570hp and 550Nm of torque, whereas in the AWD it puts down 620hp and 580Nm. The RWD is lighter, though, tipping the scales at 1,590kg. In comparison, the AWD weighs 1,695kg. However, this is no ordinary drag race! They’ll both start out with summer tyres fitted, after which they’ll switch over to winter tyres! Will there be a noticeable difference? And will the lighter RWD R8 stand a chance? Most modern cars have front-wheel drive. Typically, the engine and transmission in FWD cars are mounted at the front of the vehicles transversely, and these parts send power to the front two wheels, which pull the vehicle on their own. By contrast, rear-wheel drive cars transfer power from the engine to the rear wheels only. Most RWD cars built have the engine mounted in the front, but some rear-drive vehicles have engines in the middle or rear of the car instead – most typical in sports cars. The Benefits of Front-Wheel-Drive One of the main advantages that front-wheel-drive cars have over RWD vehicles is their improved traction, which results from their weight distribution. In front-wheel-drive vehicles, the weight of the engine above the front tires allows the tires to grip the road more effectively. This extra traction makes front-drive cars useful when it snows or when you need to navigate poorly paved roads. Since pulling is more effective than pushing when a vehicle has to dislodge itself from mud or snow, FWD vehicles are especially great for getting out of low-traction parking spots. When equipped with winter tires, a front-wheel-drive vehicle can manage winter trips much more reliably than RWDs. The Drawbacks of Front-Wheel-Drive One of the most significant drawbacks of FWDs is their handling. Although their traction is superior in bad weather, they don't take corners as precisely as rear-drives do. The pressure that both power and steering mechanisms put on the front axle tends to tax the front tires, creating a less dexterous feeling while driving. Sometimes, you might even feel the car is not responding to your steering very well or has a tendency to have a delay in your inputs. This problem is most noticeable when driving fast. Front-drive models wear out their tires quicker as a result of their front-loaded hardware, costing you more in repairs in the long-term. Also, the nose-heavy layout of FWDs sometimes makes them succumb to torque steer, a condition in which rapid acceleration causes the vehicle to drift left or right on its own. As a result, most high-performance sports cars choose rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive layouts. Fortunately, electronic traction control in many modern FWDs helps to mitigate torque steer and related problems. The Benefits of Rear-Wheel-Drive Rear-wheel drive vehicles represent the most historically traditional layout of the automobile, even though cars with RWD aren't as conventional in the 21st century. For most of the automobile's history, this wheel drive system was the only one available, so many classic cars are RWD by default. Driving a rear wheel drive car safely, quickly and in the smoothest way possible is an art form that some say is the most satisfying you can have whilst driving. I absolutely adore FWD hot hatches, but there is something special about a classic rear wheel drive sports car. You can have so much fun with oversteer that FWD hot hatches with their crazy understeer just can't quite match. Driving a RWD car is all about being progressive, smooth and thoughtful about when you open up the throttle. Get it right and it is such a rewarding experience, get it wrong and you can be facing the wrong way at some very inopportune moments. You shouldn't be scared of RWD cars however, as they truly are a fantastic experience to those wishing to learn how to use them properly! Which is best for the touge? In this video, we’re going to be discussing how each differs, and how to use each one properly. So, make sure you stay tuned because, you won’t want to miss out on this one. So, let’s start with the classic layout of engine in the front, and power in the back. This makes rear wheel drive cars well balanced in terms of weight. Making this configuration ideal for conventional performance driving. Front engined, rear wheel driven cars, also known as FRs accelerate out of corners naturally, transferring weight to the driven wheels in the back, improving traction as we step on the accelerator out of a corner. However, with FRs, or most other rear wheel driven configurations such as Front Mid Engined FMR, or Rear Mid Engined RMR, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Typically, but not always, a small amount of power out of the causes a light front end, inducing understeer. And, a lot of power causes oversteer, also known as wheelspin. But that’s not all. If you suddenly lift off the throttle whilst accelerating and turning, you will cause lift off oversteer. Finally, a bad downshift, or a money shift will cause the rears to massively decrease in speed or even lock up. And in turn, you will most likely experience a terrifying spin. If you’re not driving a FR, but an FMR OR RMR, the likelihood of all of this happening will increase dramatically, as the engine being placed farther back, only moves the centre of gravity rearwards, making the car even more unbalanced through corners. But, despite Rear Wheel Drive’s many risks, they’re mostly forgivable for the fact that rear wheel drive allows some classic power oversteer and drifting. However, many skilled drivers are also able to use rear wheel drive’s downfalls such as lift off oversteer or money shifting to their advantage. Now let’s move on to the most popular drivetrain on the planet. Front wheel drive. But if rear wheel drive is deemed to be the be all and end all of a proper driver’s car, then why is front wheel drive so popular? Well, to put it simply, it’s vastly more simple, and ultimately cost effective to build. But also, with front wheel drive, a powertrain isn’t invading the cabin, giving you more room for activities in a small form factor car. Front wheel drive’s biggest advantage is the fact that the car is being pulled instead of pushed around a corner which results in a much tighter turning circle. This means front wheel drive cars can take those tight corners much more efficiently. Additionally, they won’t need to worry about oversteer on the exit of corners. Even if a front wheel driven car does oversteer, all you need to do is full throttle and the rear tyres will fall back into line instantly. Not only this, but the powertrain is mounted directly above the front wheels, giving better traction in wet conditions. But, as will rear wheel drive, it’s not perfect, at all. Front wheel drive can really hinder even a decent driver’s pursuit of a quick touge time. Those poor front tyres have got to do almost everything. They accelerate, steer and do most of the braking at the same time. When two tyres are asked to do too much, they typically fail. Tyres only have a certain amount of grip. When you accelerate, turn and brake, a chunk of that grip is taken away. So, when the front tyres have to have all three actions to content with, it’s extremely easier to hit the limit of grip. So, if you want to trail brake into a corner, which requires both braking and steering at the same time, you have to be very cautious to not overstress the tyres and enter understeer.
