This is the real Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia. A city and country that is shaped by its tragic history. In this video you’ll be taken on a tour of Phnom Penh which not only shows the sights, but gives an insight into the city beyond those. It sets the stage with a quick overview of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge times at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek (មជ្ឈមណ្ឌល ប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍ ជើងឯក). Without being aware of the genocide which happened there, it’s hard to understand the country as it is today. We move forward with what became of the city in the post-Khmer Rouge times, and show some of the historic sights in the city such as Wat Phnom Daun Penh (វត្តភ្នំដូនពេញ), the Central Market, the National Museum (សារមន្ទីរជាតិ) and the Royal Palace (ព្រះ បរម រាជ វាំង ចតុម្មុខ មង្គល), offering a glimpse into Cambodia’s past and present. We’ll step past the infamous Heart of Darkness nightclub and through Street 172 before soak up the sunset at Riverside. Finally we’ll take a look at the current Chinese and foreign development in the city to see what it has become and where it could be heading, with it’s malls, high rise buildings, casinos and the almost deserted newly developed island, Koh Pich (កោះពេជ្រ). Of course Phnom Penh is going to have some bridges. Cambodia's capital was built at the confluence of Cambodia's 2 greatest rivers - the Tonle Sap and the Mekong. However, the city doesn't really have a lot of huge bridges. As of right now there are 3 in operation (4 if you count the one north of the city on the border of Kandal), but that will change very soon as a new bridge that connects Chbar Ampov to Koh Pich (Diamond Island) will be opening by the end of the year. This bridge will help people get to National Road #1 from downtown Phnom Penh. It will also alleviate some of the traffic on the Monivong Bridge. Looking even further into the future, there are plans to build a huge bridge from the Night Market area to Chroy Changvar, and onward to the area called Arey Ksat, which is on the other side of the Mekong. It will be the first bridge in Phnom Penh to cross the mighty Mekong river. This bridge will eventually connect to the highway that is being built from Phnom Penh to the border of Vietnam. Cambodia has changed so much since I first visited it over 10 years ago, and it's still changing at a rapid pace. It's an exciting place to live.
