Alkartasuna SA was a company formed in 1914 by a handful of disgruntled Astra (well, Astra was still called Esperanza y Unceta at that time) employees. This was a difficult time for the Eibar gun industry - demand was low, their reputation for quality was not good (the lack of a central proof house didn't help this), and many companies were shedding workers. Master gunsmiths could be found building roads instead of guns as the province started major civic works projects to counter the growing unemployment. However, the Alkartasuna founders picked a fortuitous time to create their own company, as World War One was about to create an unimaginable demand for arms. By 1917, Alkartasuna was producing 25,000 pistols per year for Italian and French military contracts - pistols of the standard Ruby pattern. When this demand ended after the Armistice, the company looked for new products to maintain their sales. One suck project was the Alkar pistol, which was most likely subcontracted to another manufacturer to save on startup tooling costs. The Alkar is a blowback action in .25ACP, but has a very unusual grip safety. It also has a series of viewing windows on the left grip panel, which worked in conjunction with a pointer attached to the magazine follower to indicate the number of cartridges remaining. The windows were marked numerically; 1, 2, 3, etc up to the full capacity of 7. The marking that grabbed my attention, however, was the clever "?" that was indicated when the magazine was empty. At that point, the gun may be empty or it may still have a single round in the chamber - you don't know until you check it. That "?" is a clever acknowledgement of that status.

This educational video is a demonstration of the comparative penetration ability of some of the most common handgun rounds. There are of course both more powerful and less powerful cartridge choices available, as well as cartridges that fall somewhere in the middle ranges of those shown in this video such as the 9mm Makarov or the .38 Special, but statistically the cartridges used in this video are the most common to be possessed or used. Weapons used in this demonstration Baby Browning, caliber .25acp Colt M1903 ,caliber .32acp Remington Model 51, caliber .380acp Luger S/42, caliber 9mm Parabellum Colt SAA (1st generation 1912), caliber .45 Colt The ballistics of the .45acp cartridge in factory loads is so similar to the .45 Colt cartridge that the performance of the two factory ball ammunition cartridges would be hard to tell apart therefore a decision was made to use the older revolver cartridge. Given comparable barrel lengths, more modern handguns chambered for the cartridges tested in this video would have essentially the exact same performance as barrel length, not the date of the gun manufacture is what determines the terminal ballistics of a given cartridge. Made especially to be operated with one hand, this German pistol is fittingly known as the "Einhand" or one-handed. Produced by Bergmann up until 1922, at which time the company was bought out by Lignose, however Lignose continued to use Bergmann parts until stocks were used up. Both companies made various different small caliber pistols but only the variants with an "A" suffix possess the "Einhand" feature. Share this video: 🤍 Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 Introduced by John Browning in 1905, the .25 ACP cartridge was designed to be fired in the Fabrique Nationale Model 1905 pistol. This was a centerfire “vest pocket” pistol, made for gentlemen who needed their firearms to remain undetectable. But among other bad press, some firearms authorities dismissed the small caliber as a "mouse gun." The cartridge is lethal, however, and firearms in this caliber should be treated with the same respect as larger caliber weapons. Small, inexpensive firearms intended for concealed carry in a pocket or small handbag are the primary weapon chambered for this caliber. Its small size, makes concealment much easier than with larger handguns in a variety of situations and locations. With a centerfire primer, it's more reliable than .22 LR rimfire cartridges, which are found in similar-sized pistols. An abundance of self-protection loads are available for the .25 ACP, which are worth consideration with recent advancements in technology. Many firearms have been chambered for this cartridge, including several revolvers as well as antiques manufactured in Belgium or Italy. The unique Lercker pistol was fully automatic with a 20-round magazine, and fired 1,200 rounds per minute. It was not produced widely, yet this interesting pistol sheds new light on the .25 ACP as a self-defense cartridge. Firearms enthusiasts either love or hate this caliber, but its many fans throughout the world are why manufacturers also continue to produce volumes of practice ammo and include it in their self-defense product lines. With mild recoil and acceptable accuracy and reliability, the .25 ACP will continue to be used for backup and deep concealment needs for a long time to come.
